Two brothers living under the burden of expectation on a collision course with the shadows of a tragic past...

For the past year, seventeen-year-old Chase Peterson has been at war with the word "should." He should go to college. He should give up on the Marines. He should stop trying to be like his brother, Danny.

It's the summer after graduation. His brother is home from the Corps, fresh out of Afghanistan, and only three short months remain until Chase can sign his own Marine enlistment contract. It was supposed to be great. It's turning into a slow hell.

His girlfriend dumps him. He's shoveling horse manure to make a buck after giving up his job for Danny, and his parents won't drop their college campaign. The worst is Danny's descent into self-destruction—fighting, drinking, and run-ins with the law. All Chase's attempts to connect with his brother lead only to more frustration, and Danny just keeps slipping farther away.

As Chase struggles to understand Danny, he finds an unlikely ally in Olga Gutierrez, the girl he's been trying to ignore for the past five years. However, when a final betrayal threatens to destroy the brothers' relationship forever and exposes the truth of a long-kept secret about Olga's own brother's death in Iraq, Chase will come to question everything he once thought he knew about Danny and himself.

Chasing Danny eBook K R Schulteis

Chasing Danny was a wonderful read, a reality-based young adult novel about coming of age, idealism, and the brutal effects of our modern wars on our finest young men. We watch as Chase's dreams, like Holden Caulfield's in Catcher in the Rye, become more mature with age and guidance; we see him change his mission as he has experiences with people he loves and admires and his relationships grow and change; and then we see what can happen to our best and brightest in the realities of today's average young men.

Chasing Danny is an experience shared, not an amusement. We experience Chase as he himself feels, and we both admire Danny because of Chase's love for him, and detest this older brother for his savage behavior. I feel this book may soon "catch" in readership because of its honesty and courage in exploring a theme that still seems to be fearsome to American citizens as we all watch war become a new and uncharted horror.

Chasing Danny eBook K R Schulteis Reviews

I got my copy about a week ago when I was right in the middle of another book so I shoved it to the side. But now that i am reading this I cant hardly put it down. I am only a few chapters in but this book is great. I love the writing style she uses, makes me want to read all of her work. I will update my review once I am closer to finishing the book.
Chasing Danny by K. R. Schulteis is a very interesting look into the dynamics of a younger brother looking up to his older brother and wanting to be just like him. Danny decided after 9/11 that he was going to be a Marine when he graduated from High School. Chase decides that is what he will do to even though he is not like Danny. At the time that Danny is returning from Afghanistan, Chase only has a three month wait to join. The boys parents look at Danny as a hero, and the town, but fight with Chase about joining the Marines. The won't sign so he can go early, they tell him he has to wait until he is eighteen. His mother pushes all the college information at Chase trying to get him to go to college. They talk Danny into trying to talk Chase out of enlisting. But all Chase has ever wanted to be was like his older brother.

I guess I didn't realize how much males want to be like their older brother. I've read many, many stories about females and have never seen this close a pattern of wanting to be like an older sister. I enjoyed the book very much and would read more from Ms. Schulteis.

I received this book for free from Goodreads..
I wanted to like this book. We read this book for our book club and the synopsis was intriguing. The book, however, was not. I kept reading page after page in hopes that a plot would surface. When I got to the last page I was completely disappointed. This book was just a story that followed a small section of a young man's life. In the end I kept thinking, what was this all about? PTSD? Boys becoming men? Horses capable of intelligently interacting with humans? Mental health issues? Verbal abuse? Socioeconomic structure issues? et. al.
I just really was lost, and then irritated that I felt I wasted my time reading the story. The main idea/plot was lost amongst a wave of small ideas and notions. If this story was about the affects of PTSD on a family structure, then it needed to be more about that and less of the angst ridden teen love triangle. If instead it was about a boy becoming a man and facing guy issues, it should have been more about that and less of the mental health/ptsd.
All in all, that's just my two cents on it, you may enjoy reading "Chasing Danny". Don't let my review prevent you from reading the story. One should always make up his/her own mind when reading stories. Reading is a wonderful thing, even when you feel you have lost hours of your time reading drivel, it is still good for your soul.
